Operational information
Smooth Radio provides a high quality radio service for the mature adult listener. Broadcasting 24 hours a day, the service is designed to satisfy the needs and interests of people in the East Midlands aged 45 and over.
Our emphasis is on familiar, melodic music from the last five decades with a sprinkling of current contemporary music.
Most peak-time programming output on Smooth Radio is locally produced from within the transmission area. At other times, programmes are shared across the Smooth Radio network. On weekdays, the Breakfast Show (6am to 10am), Afternoon Show (1pm to 4pm) and Drivetime (4pm to 8pm) are all locally produced. The Mark Goodier Show (10am to 1pm) is produced in London and broadcast across the Smooth network.
The weekday and Sunday Evening show (8pm to midnight) and Overnight show (Midnight to 6am) are produced for the Smooth Radio network from Newcastle. Tony Blackburn's Weekend Breakfast Show (Saturday and Sunday 7am to 10am) and The Chris Tarrant Show (Saturday 10am to 1pm) are broadcast from London across the Smooth Radio and GMG networks respectively. On Saturday evenings, Andy Peebles Soul Train Show (6pm to 9pm) and the Smooth Rock Show (9pm to midnight) are both produced and broadcast from Newcastle across the Smooth Radio network.
Locally produced shows on Saturday include the Early Morning Show (6am to 7am) and Afternoon Show (2pm to 6pm). On Sunday, locally produced shows include the Early Morning Show (6am to 7am), the Mid-Morning show (10am to 1pm) and Evening show (5pm to 8pm). At all other times over the weekend, programmes are shared with the Smooth Radio network and originate from either London or Newcastle.
The station uses a sophisticated automation system for some of its off peak programming. Automated hours include Saturday and Sunday (6am to 7am and 1pm to 2pm), and Sunday evening (5pm to 8pm).
Specialist Music Programmes
Smooth Radio is required by the terms of its OFCOM format to provide "at least 12 hours of identifiable specialist music programmes each week".
The Specialist Music Programmes currently broadcast by Smooth Radio are "The Soul Train" (Saturday 6-9pm), "Reelin' In The Years" (Saturday 9pm – midnight), "70s at 7" (Sunday to Friday 7-8pm) and various Music Documentary series (Saturday and Sunday 1-2pm)

Smooth Radio is a regionally relevant full service radio station. We focus on interests and issues reflecting life across the East Midlands – from travel news to what’s on, local anecdotes to public service information and regularly updated weather forecasts. Such speech content is presented in a comprehensive yet concise manner.
Every day we broadcast regular entertainments information Guide, pertaining to arts and events across the region, in particular local concert and theatre productions. There’s also community related information, comprising charitable or non-profit making activities and appeals.

News contact information
Smooth Radio provides news bulletins containing regional, national and international news and weather from 6am to midnight inclusive Monday to Friday, and 7am to 11pm Saturday and Sunday. Bulletin lengths vary from between 3 to 5 minutes during normal weekdays. At all other times a 2 minute UK-wide bulletin from Sky Radio News is broadcast.
